Located at the extreme southern tip of India in the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka is a mountain-shaped, water-drop island with lush, dense tropical vegetation and long beaches on its west coast. The island stretches from north to south for 353 km. The central mountain range is surrounded by a coastal plain. The highest peak is Piduratalagala (2,524m), but the Adam Peak (2,224m), where the Mahaweli River originates, is more impressive. In the north-west of the country, the island of Mannar, connected by a bridge, is almost attached to southern India (about fifty km distant) by a long succession of sandbars and islets forming the Adam's bridge.
