SPINALONGA "THE ISLAND"

Historical landmark
30 minutes away
Background of the world-famous novel "The Island" by Victoria Hislop. The most famous island on Crete with its Venetian Fortress and houses. Founded in 1579 by the Venetian benefactor Luca Michiel as part of the organizaton of the defence of Crete, particularly against the expansion of the Turks and the incursions of pirates. From 1669-1715 it was a refuge for Venetians, Hainidons and escapees. From 1903-1957 Spinalonga became a leper colony by order of the Greek Government. Since 1957 it has remained uninhabited but recently restoration of its buildings has commenced. The public buildings, the houses and the surrounding wall which are being restored, revitalize the history of the island and celebrate the magnificent beauty of the fortress, the island itself and the entire landscae. The island is approachable by boat, either from Aghios Nikolaos or Elounda.

PLATEAU OF LASSITHI

Recreation
45 km away
The Lassithi Plateau (approx. altitude 1000 m) is well known for the thousands of white sailed windmills, 10000 in all, this is how the plain used to be irrigated, a scenic way of supplying water, designed by Venetian engineers in 1464. Although very few windmills are in use today, it still makes a splendid sight against the mountains. The fertile soil of the Lassithi Plateau is mostly growing potatoes and apples. There area also many almond trees which blossom in late January, giving the plateau a wonderful appearance. People have inhabited Lassithi since Neolithic times (6000 B.C.) except for a period of 200 years during Venetian rule. The Venetians could not control the inhabitants of Lassithi because of its position in the mountains, so, once the pople were relocated, they forbade the plateau to be inhabited under penalty of death. You may circle the plateaum visiting its villages along a paved road. A visit to The Dikti Cave, said to be the birthplace of Zeus is well worth a visit while here. (See separate description).
