Parque Nacional Cabo Pulmo

Park
120 km away
In front of the coast of Cabo Pulmo there is the biggest coral reef of the Gulf of California and because of its age, it might be the oldest reef in the American coast of the Pacific Ocean. Due to its ecological importance and in order to protect it from overfishing, a group of inhabitants from Cabo Pulmo got together, and with the support of the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Sur, they asked the federal authorities to name this marine area a Protected Natural Area. Thanks to this initiative and the joint effort of the community, scientists, scholars, civil organizations and government in the local and federal levels, Cabo Pulmo was created on June 6th, 1995, a marine reserve of 7 thousand 111 hectares, in the category of National Park. Unlike other places in the world, during 18 years of protection, the coral reef of Cabo Pulmo has recovered from overfishing, becoming the marine area with the largest concentration of fish in the Gulf of California. The protection and recovery of the marine community and the reef has led to the return of migratory species such as whale sharks, giant oceanic manta rays, humpback whales, sea turtles and sharks. This zone is vital for the reproductive cycle of sea turtles in Baja California Sur. Three out of the 7 existing sea turtles species lay their eggs there, including the olive ridley and the leatherback that are in danger of extinction. This wealth has been recognized internationally. In 2005 Cabo Pulmo was included in the World Heritage Site list by UNESCO and in 2008 in the list by the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. Cabo Pulmo is an example of the ecological and economic benefits that healthy ecosystems provide, becoming one of the main diving sites in the Mexican Pacific and an important recipient of nature tourism in the state. Besides being a source of income for the touristic sector, the Cabo Pulmo reef is a source of life that exports fish to other marine areas, favoring the fishing sector in the East Cape and Baja California Sur. Cabo Pulmo has become an international example of marine conservation with the participation of the community, which has encouraged a truly sustainable touristic development model.
