Art Nouveau - Saint Gilles Area

Ponto de referência histórica
15 minutes de distância
Saint-Gilles is the city's bohemian epicenter with thriving French, Portuguese, Spanish, Maghrebi and Polish communities. The area around the Parvis de St-Gilles is the arty part, with the area around the Chatelain and the Church of the Holy Trinity being decidedly more yuppified. Saint-Gilles boasts as well several Art Nouveau and Haussmann-style buildings. It hosts an annual open day for local artists, the “Parcours des Artistes”, the colorful annual festival of Brussels's Portuguese community and an annual winegrowers' festival (fête des vignerons). Halfway between the elegant and opulent neighborhoods of upper Saint-Gilles and the South train station (Gare du Midi) lies the church square (Parvis de l’église Saint-Gilles), where a picturesque and colorful market operates on weekends. In an age when neo-classical architecture was in full swing, Victor Horta’s question was to undermine existing conceptions and bring new talents to the fore. By playing with different spaces, by exploiting all the resources offered by lights and colours, and submitting shapes and materials to the will of his pencil, Horta was the precursor of a revolutionary, vibrant and inspired Art Nouveau. The Brussels scene quickly became a hive of frenzied activity thanks to the contributions made by the colleagues of this visionary, who included Hankar, Strauven, Blérot, the Delune brothers, Cauchie… and more than twenty others. Without copying one another or even falling prey to imitation, all seemed to be guided towards an objective that was both aesthetic and spiritual: the creation of a catalogue of lines, shapes and atmospheres that had no parallel. The Horta Museum is established in the private house and studio of the famous architect, Victor Horta. Built between 1898 and 1901, the two buildings are characteristic of Art Nouveau at its peak. The house has kept intact most of its interior decors: mosaics, stained-glass windows, furniture, paintings and murals form a collection whose every detail evokes harmony and sophistication.

Recreação
10 minutes de distância
Ixelles is one of the liveliest localities in Brussels. Thoroughfares of shops and stores and perfectly-sited outside tables happily coexist in the mix of local community atmospheres. In the middle, the Saint-Boniface district, loyal to its good food establishments in unfailingly original settings, borders on the highly colorful Matongé quarter. Its inhabitants, who are mainly Africans, open up their doors and sunny terraces. Farther along, Ixelles’ Museums of Architecture and Fine Arts flit non-stop between retrospectives and avant-gardism. In possession of the biggest collection of Toulouse Lautrec posters, the latter also displays works from the leading names of Fauvism and of the Cobra movement. The museum has a major series of fin-de-siècle poster art. Two rooms are devoted to art from the 16th to 18th century. However, the museum is best known for its collections from the 19th and 20th centuries, which offer a broad panorama of the period’s various painting schools. And then, right at the bottom end of Ixelles, there’s Flagey, the old radio broadcasting centre, which has genuinely resumed service by offering a specialized and varied schedule over the last two years. Whether it’s for cinema, song or visual arts, it’s always tempting to go discover something there.

Le Sablon

Ponto de referência histórica
10 minutes de distância
So close and yet so different, these two districts are a real gold mine for art lovers, collectors or bargain hunters. It is also overflowing with an infectious ‘joie de vivre’. The antique and modern art galleries of the Sablon constitute a chic museum in themselves, where (almost) everyone can chance on that rare and elusive pearl thanks to its eclectic mix. The nearby Law Courts were wittily re-baptised ‘the large inkpot’ by Victor Hugo. Its panoramic view on place Poelaert can be reached in thirty seconds via the bizarre lift that lands in the very heart of Rue Haute. A constant whirl of activity, the popular Rue Haute and Rue Blaes are thronged with the most unexpected bric-a-brac and decoration shops, carefully interspersed with typical and welcoming cafés and restaurants. Tempting, carefully-prepared dishes are served alongside soups and soft cheese sandwiches. The ‘zwanze’ is a must: once you’ve heard an absurd, incredible or surreal story told in the good old brusseleer accent, you’ll have reached the roots of the Marolles. All of this local tradition is further enhanced by the fantastic bric-a-brac: the flea market that’s held every morning on Place du Jeu de Balle! NOTRE-DAME DU SABLON - In 1304 a small chapel was built by the city's crossbowmen on the then empty square. In the 15th century, the chapel was rebuilt and then given lasting legitimacy by the attendance of leading figures from the aristocracy. Today the church is seen as a remarkable example of the Ogival style in the city. Inside, the central nave is illuminated by 11 stained-glass windows measuring 15 metres in height. In 1549, a small chapel was added to the church, dedicated to the Tour and Tassis family, founders in Brussels of the city's international postal service at the beginning of the 16th century.

Located in the heart of up-town Brussels, Avenue Louise is the city’s most fashionable shopping area. Fancy brands can be found as well in the Toison D’or and Louise shopping galleries, whereas the glamorous Boulevard de Waterloo, on the left side of Place Louise, is THE adress for haute couture shopping. Every day is market day in Brussels: Antiques are sold on Place du Grand Sablon, Saturday and Sunday morning, while the flea market at Place du Jeu de Balle, in the Marolles district, is open every morning (along with the shops of Rue Blaes and Rue Haute). Place du Châtelain is animated every Wednesday by a colorful market where you can find food, clothes and wines, and on Sundays, a huge market of oriental delicacies takes place near the South train station from 6am to 1pm.
