Museum Frieder Burda

Museum
5 minutes away
The Collection Frieder Burda The internationally-renowned Collection Frieder Burda concentrates on Classical Modernism and contemporary art and now encompasses around 1000 paintings, sculptures, objects, photographs and works on paper. The Museum will show the Collection to the public in varying presentations and taking ever-changing factors and new contexts into consideration. A fundamental part of the alternating exhibitions will also relate to the Collection, so that with the museum a place will be created for animated reflection and discussion on the works of art of the Collection. Frieder Burda was born in Gengenbach, Baden, in south-western Germany, in 1936 as the second son of the publisher, printing house proprietor and Senator, Dr. Franz Burda. After attending schools in Offenbach and Switzerland he completed an apprenticeship in printing and publishing. His commercial training was accomplished in his father's firm. He spent several years in France, England and in the USA before taking over a printing house in Darmstadt. Frieder Burda expanded this operation into one of the leading job-printing houses in Europe. In 1973 he entered the services of Burda GmbH in Offenburg as shareholder responsible for finances, participatory interests and administration. Following the death of his father in 1986 Frieder Burda devoted increased attention to art alongside his entrepreneurial commitments. The fascination of colour and of the emotional expressive qualities of painting are at the centre of the collector's interest in art. This perspective has given rise to a Collection with a personal style, bringing together pioneering positions of painting in the 20th century. In so doing, the Collection concentrates on a select number of artists whose works are acquired with determination, assembling a comprehensive range of the œuvre of some artists. In order to maintain the integral nature of the Collection and make it accessible to the public, a museum was built in Frieder Burda's home city of Baden-Baden. The plans have been drafted by the New York architect Richard Meier. The Museum Frieder Burda was inaugurated in the autumn of 2004 and will be fully financed and run by the Foundation Frieder Burda which was established in 1998.

Theater Baden-Baden

Theater
10 minutes away
At the instigation of Edouard Bénazet, a former casino director, the theater was modeled on the Paris Opera by Charles Couteau. Especially for the opening in August 1862 Hector Berlioz composed the opera Béatrice et Bénédict after Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. In 1869 Jacques Offenbach conducted the premiere of his operetta La princesse de Trébizonde. Since 1918 the theater has had an ensemble of permanently employed actors. Opera and other works of the musical theater are also performed as part of guest performances and co-productions. At the beginning of the 1990s the theater was completely renovated and equipped with modern technology. The theater is one of the venues of the New Pop Festival. The premises, especially the foyer, can be rented for weddings and other events.

Casino Baden-Baden

Nightlife
10 minutes away
Casino Baden-Baden: Dive into a world of old-school gaming with roulette, blackjack, poker and slot machines in the ambience of the Belle Epoque. Baden-Baden is more than a city – Baden-Baden is a way of life. And Casino Baden-Baden at the Kurhaus is more than a casino – as you stroll through the lavish arcades and ceremonial halls, you’ll quickly feel the enchantment in the casino. It’s more than a feeling, there’s that sense of history – the Kurhaus was once the epitome of European bathing and spa culture attracting Europe's high society for an easy, carefree summer at this magnificently genteel edifice that earned Baden-Baden the reputation as Europe’s summer capital in the Black Forest. A round at the tables for a game of cards, or later roulette, was just as much part of this way of life after spending a day strolling through the casino’s sumptuous grounds. We’ve since cultivated and gently modernised this source of splendid diversion that was once the privilege of the upper ten thousand, adding entertainment to recreation at Casino Baden-Baden. Gambling stayed, of course, how could it be any different after two centuries of tradition? We now have poker and Las Vegas-style slot machines in addition to roulette and blackjack in an atmosphere of classical architecture combining casino gaming and style, gambling and glamour in an ensemble of tradition and modernity. The games. There’s a very special feeling to roulette; we have classical French Roulette at two tables and American roulette where gaming is fast and rapid, and altogether more American, at seven other tables. If you prefer a game of cards over the spinning roulette wheel, you’ll feel right at home at one of our five blackjack tables; if you’re a master of your emotions, you might like to try your hand at poker – it’s full house at the Kurhaus. Or how about a go on the machines under our historic vaulted ceilings? You’ll find a place with the latest high-tech with more than a hundred and forty slot machines, touch-screen machines, video slots, and video roulette systems for that Las Vegas sensation in the lower, separately accessible part of our casino.

The reconstructed opera house was designed by the Viennese architect Wilhelm Holzbauer in the mid-1990’s in accordance with ideal acoustic values calculated by the acclaimed Munich-based physicist Karlheinz Müller.
