Brooklyn Bridge

Historical landmark
10 minutes away
The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. Completed in 1883, it connects the New York City boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn by spanning the East River. With a main span of 1,595.5 feet (486.3 m), it was the longest suspension bridge in the world from its opening until 1903, and the first steel-wire suspension bridge.Originally referred to as the New York and Brooklyn Bridge, it was dubbed the Brooklyn Bridge in a January 25, 1867 letter to the editor of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle,[5] and formally so named by the city government in 1915. Since its opening, it has become an iconic part of the New York skyline. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964[4][6][7] and a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1972.

Battery Park

Park
1 mi. away
For more than 200 years, Battery Park has been an invaluable part of New York City’s history. In 1855, Castle Garden, situated inside the Park, became the world’s first immigrant depot. Decades before Ellis Island was built or the Statue of Liberty gazed down at incoming boats, millions of newcomers arrived at Battery Park from Europe and elsewhere. Although its role has changed, people from around the world still visit Battery Park for a view of the city's past. Ferries dock at its shore to pick up visitors to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, and all summer long concerts play on its grounds. Its beautiful waterfront and flower gardens make Battery Park a lovely place to wander. For those who'd like a longer stroll, the park’s location at the southern tip of Manhattan makes it a classic starting point for walking tours through the city.

Chinatown

Recreation
10 minutes away
With one of the densest populations of Chinese immigrants in the Western Hemisphere, Manhattan's Chinatown is a true New York story, the American dream in action. The thriving immigrant population gives visitors access to the most far-flung wares and culinary delights, and to walk these streets is to walk through history (it's where much of the action in Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York took place). A great starting point is Chatham Square, which lies at the intersection of seven major streets (including Bowery and Mott Street)—a metaphor, perhaps, for the neighborhood's confluence of cultures. Or maybe it's just a spot where you can find some of the best noodle soup and dim sum in the City. History buffs may want to admire Chatham Square's statue of Lin Zexu, a Qing Dynasty official who led the fight against Britain's illegal importation of opium. But most of us will just want to start eating and shopping our way through the busy streets. Which is perfectly fine; there's history in every bite here, too.

Federal Hall

Historical landmark
3 minutes away
Here on Wall Street, George Washington took the oath of office as our first President, and this site was home to the first Congress, Supreme Court, and Executive Branch offices. The current structure, a Customs House, later served as part of the US Sub-Treasury. Now, the building serves as a museum and memorial to our first President and the beginnings of the United States of America.

Staten Island Ferry

Recreation
10 minutes away
More than a means of transportation, the Staten Island Ferry is an attraction unto itself. For no charge, visitors can enjoy the 25-minute voyage by water from Lower Manhattan to Staten Island and take in the Statue of Liberty and amazing views of New York Harbor and the Manhattan skyline. The ferry drops off visitors at the St. George Ferry Terminal, just a short bus ride from the Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden. This educational and entertainment destination (a former retirement home for sailors) encompasses a number of institutions whose diverse offerings should appeal to all interests and ages. Among them are the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art, the Noble Maritime Collection and the Staten Island Children's Museum. Within walking distance of the ferry terminal is Richmond County Bank Ballpark, home of minor league baseball team the Staten Island Yankees. Catch a game at this intimate stadium, which affords glorious waterfront views from the stands.
