Ranger-Guided Walks and Talk

Our Resort Rangers conduct a series of complimentary walks and talks to help you understand a little bit more about Fraser Island's World Heritage-listed wilderness and our animals, but also about how the resort operates. We vary the walks each day and each week and most walks are complimentary, so it's always best to check our weekly What’s On Guide and choose the walk/talk that appeals most. You can pick up a What's On guide on arrival from our Reception area. Topics include (but are not limited to): Bush Tucker and Bush Medicines Aboriginal Culture (with particular reference to the Butchulla tribe) Fraser Island’s European History The dingoes of Fraser Island Mangroves and their importance in a coastal eco-system Astronomy in the southern hemisphere The flora and fauna of Fraser Island A back-of-house inspection into the inner workings of an eco-resort, a tour of the sewage-treatment plant (we call it our poo farm), worm farm, herb garden and native-foods garden. Want to know more about what we do before you arrive? Check out our Resort Ranger blog which features the wild, the weird and the wonderful on the world's largest sand island.

Beauty Spots Tour

On this beautiful day out off-roading, you’ll visit the top natural attractions and cool off in watering holes - and all in the air-conditioned comfort of our custom-designed, four-wheel-drive coaches. DISCOVER Gorgeous Lake McKenzie. Central Station and Wanggoolba Creek. Pile Valley’s stunning Satinay and Brush Box forests. Seventy-Five Mile Beach's famous highway. The Maheno shipwreck and the coloured sands of The Pinnacles. The temperate, fresh waters of Eli Creek. The mighty Stonetool Sand Blow. We’ll bring lunch, so just pack your swim wear and your sunscreen for this adventure.

Take to the water and enjoy the fresh air and the best of the great outdoors. Our water sports program - including the hire of stand-up paddle boards, kayaks and Vu boards - provides lots of fun and opportunities to learn about this very special island, without impacting on the environment. Our Jetty Hut is the watersports hub where you can book activities and the place to catch a great sunset over the Sandy Straits.

Whale Watching (Aug to Oct)

In our neck of the woods the Humpbacks aren't just passing through on their way to their breeding grounds each August through October* - they're actually taking time out in the pristine waters off Fraser Island to socialise, have some fun, learn some essential lifeskills and nuture their young. For whale watchers it really is a question of who is watching whom on these great days out... our guests are encouraged to wave their arms, stamp their feet and make a bit of noise - the whales love it. Their natural curiosity takes over and they glide up to the boats to have a look as what the 'silly' humans are doing now - in return the Humpbacks put on an almighty show - slapping their tails, shaking their pec fins and leaping into the air, only to splash down. Skipper Brian Perry and the team on Quick Cat II provide a fun, day out in World Heritage waters looking and you'll have the photos and video to prove it. Shuttle transfers leave from the resort's reception to the jetty head. Our hydrophone lets you listen to the live underwater sounds of the male Humpbacks. Our underwater viewing camera beams images onto screens around the boat. We provide expert commentary from the family who pioneered whale watching in Hervey Bay. Wheel chair access, children's activity books and homemade morning tea are all part of the service. Whale information available in English, French, Italian, Spanish, German, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Advanced Eco Accreditation. There's a money-back guarantee if you don't see whales. Once onboard, ask the Whale Cruise staff about purchasing an upgrade to a swim with the whales experience (and don't forget to take your swimmers and a towel). But don't just take our word for it. Writer Jessica Jane Sammut came face-to-face with these gentle giants of the deep on a family holiday to Fraser Island. This is her story. Available: August to late October. Cruises depart the resort: at 7.45am daily, returning at 12noon.
