St. Irene Museum

St. Irene is the biggest church of the Byzantine Empire and Turkey’s first museum. It was built between 324-337 B.C by Constantine the First. Remnants from the Eoman era such as pieces belonging to the Artemis, Aphrodite and Apollon temples have been used during its construction. After the conquest of Istanbul it was used as the ammunitions depot. It stayed as a military museum until 1949 and now hosts many cultural activities.

Hagia Sophia Museum

Originally built as a tombstone for a Greek leader, it later became a customs port during the Byzantine Empire and during the Ottoman period it had various uses such as an activity platform, defence castle, place of exile and quarantine quarter. Today it is a famous restaurant.
