Novodevichy Convent

Historical Landmark
9 km away
Novodevichy Convent, also known as Bogoroditse-Smolensky Monastery, is probably the best-known cloister of Moscow. Its name, sometimes translated as the New Maidens' Monastery, was devised to differ from an ancient maidens' convent within the Moscow Kremlin. Unlike other Moscow cloisters, it has remained virtually intact since the 17th century. In 2004, it was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Muzeon Art Park

20 minutes away
This fascinating park is the dumping ground for statues from the Soviet Union that lost their places in Russia’s parks and squares following the collapse of Communism. Highlights include the huge steel sculpture of the Soviet world, the many giant pedestal-less Lenins, monuments to the Red Army and Joseph Stalin with his nose cut off. The park has over 700 sculptures although the majority are small cute replicas of children, clowns, poets and workers.

GUM Department Store

7 minutes away
GUM is the name of the main department store in many cities of the former Soviet Union, known as State Department Store (Russian: Государственный универсальный магазин; Gosudarstvennyi Universalnyi Magazin) during the Soviet times. Similarly named stores were found in some Soviet republics and post-Soviet states. The most famous GUM is the large store in the Kitai-gorod part of Moscow facing Red Square. It is currently a shopping mall. Prior to the 1920s, the location was known as the Upper Trading Rows. Nearby, also facing Red Square, is a building very similar to GUM, known formerly as the Middle Trading Rows. It is about the same size as a large North American shopping mall.

Gorky Park

30 minutes away
Gorky Park is the capital’s central park, with more than 40 000 visitors on weekdays and 250 000 on weekends and public holidays. Since 2011 the park has been setting new standards, becoming Russia’s first world-class park and a space for recreation, sport, dance and outdoor games. Free entry, Wi-Fi coverage, new zones of contemporary design, a well thought-out events programme and regard for people have transformed Gorky Park into an epicentre of life in the capital, making it one of the main points of attraction for youth, adults and the family alike.

Bolshoi Theatre

30 minutes away
On 28 March (17 according to the old style) 1776, Catherine II granted the prosecutor, Prince Pyotr Urusov, the "privilege" of "maintaining" theatre performances of all kinds, including masquerades, balls and other forms of entertainment, for a period of ten years. And it is from this date that Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre traces its history. The Bolshoi Theatre is a symbol of Russia for all time. It was awarded this honor due to the major contribution it made to the history of the Russian performing arts. This history is on-going and today Bolshoi Theatre artists continue to contribute to it many bright pages.
