Now open in Manhattan’s Flatiron District, Freehand New York is housed in the former George Washington Hotel - which was once home to many storied writers, musicians and creatives. The hotel’s standalone restaurant, Simon & The Whale, is led by restaurateur Gabriel Stulman’s Happy Cooking Hospitality, known for their family of West Village restaurants including Joseph Leonard, Jeffrey’s Grocery, Fedora, Fairfax and Bar Sardine. Sydell Group and Stulman have also collaborated on the second floor’s all-day restaurant and café, Studio, as well as The George Washington Bar, an inspired cocktail bar with laidback vibes. For guests on the go, Matt Kliegman, Carlos Quirarte & Melia Marden will open a takeout outpost of their popular Noho café, The Smile, and is set to open Spring 2018. Gabriel Orta and Elad Zvi of Bar Lab will also bring Broken Shaker, winner “Best Hotel Bar in America” by Tales of The Cocktail (2015). Opening spring 2018. Freehand New York has also launched The Freehand Fellowship in partnership with Live Arts Bard, Bard College’s artist residency and commissioning program, and the Bard MFA program, where selected artists will have the opportunity to live, work and exhibit at the hotel.
