The name seems to date back to the Roman conquest. An old legend tells that two indefatigable Roman exiles , after stealing the crown from the statue of Jupiter Stator from the Capitol of Rome, fled to Etruria . The two exiles, whose names were Pitiglio Ciliano and decided to found a new city in this place and call it just Pitigliano. The history of Pitigliano had a long secular swing , until the fall of the empire. In the Middle Ages it was one of the many castles in the family Aldobrandeschis, but with the marriage of Anastasia Aldobrandeschis and Romano Orsini , the whole estate passed to this noble Roman family. The city grew significantly to become the most important center of the Alta Maremma . In addition, in the sixteenth century it became the refuge for a large number of Jews forced to flee the Papal State. The large Jewish community was formed so that still exists today , and over the centuries has earned the nickname of Pitigliano "Little Jerusalem" . Today Pitigliano is the largest city of the territory, as well as the point of reference of social, economic and administrative area of Tufi . A visit can not start it from the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie , a point from which you can enjoy a memorable view of the whole city and the tuff spur that supports it.
