A lively night life with live music can also be found at places like Boo Radley's, Grand Central and Pat's Kitchen. In 2011, a new walking trail was established in an effort to encourage healthy habits among downtowners. Mobile Ballet has a full repertoire of classical ballets, staging at least three major productions each year, including the holiday favorite The Nutcracker. Others include The Sleeping Beauty, Giselle and Swan Lake, along with original works by artistic director Winthrop Corey. With a company of more than 30 dancers, the Mobile Ballet has evolved into an outstanding regional dance company, serving more than 6,000 schoolchildren annually through its Discover Dance program.
The Mobile Opera celebrated its 65th anniversary with the 2010-11 season. Its continuing commitment to the development of promising young American operatic talent has seen outstanding artists leave the Mobile stage for appearances with the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, San Francisco Opera and more. The company offices are at the Josephine Larkins Music Center (which it shares with the Mobile Symphony) and feature a 2,400-square-foot rehearsal hall, seven private music studios, conference room, catering kitchen and landscaped courtyard. Founded in 1929, the annual rodeo attracts more than 3,000 anglers and 75,000 spectators. A project of the Mobile Jaycees, it's located on Dauphin Island. The three-day event features 30 categories with prizes in first, second and third place in all categories.
