Sofia Travel and Things to Do Guide

Sofia is one of Europe's oldest capitals, with 7,000 years of history visible on almost every street. Roman Serdica lies beneath the modern center, the UNESCO-listed medieval Boyana Church sits on the city's edge, and Vitosha Mountain rises right behind the skyline. Today the capital of Bulgaria, a member of the European Union and the Schengen Area, Sofia combines this heritage with modern, well-equipped meeting facilities and costs that let event budgets go further.

Getting to Sofia
Vasil Levski Sofia Airport sits just 10 kilometers from the city center and connects directly to major European and Middle Eastern cities . Metro line M4 links the terminal to downtown in under 25 minutes. Within the city, four metro lines with more than 50 stations, plus buses, trams, and trolleybuses, connect business districts, hotels, venues and landmarks, and passengers can pay simply by tapping a contactless card, phone, or smartwatch. The Central Bus Station and Central Railway Station sit side by side just north of the center, and Sofia's position on three Pan-European Transport Corridors (IV, VIII, and X) makes it Bulgaria's main highway hub.

The Meeting Facilities
At the heart of the city stands the National Palace of Culture (NDK), the largest congress complex in Southeastern Europe and a short walk from its own metro station. Its 15 halls and 55 meeting rooms offer more than 8,000 seats in total, with the main hall seating up to 3,692 delegates and over 15,000 square meters of exhibition space.

Accommodation
Accommodation matches the scale of the venues. Sofia has more than a dozen five-star hotels, many run by leading international brands as well as local ones, and equipped with ballrooms and meeting suites. Alongside them is a large selection of four- and three-star hotels, with hundreds of rooms, giving groups of every size and budget plenty of choice. Boutique venues and heritage buildings add character and experienced local PCOs and DMCs combine local knowledge with international best practice. The city's own Event Planners' Guide covers venues, accommodation, transport, suppliers and incentives in the capital.

After hours
After the sessions end, delegates can explore the Serdica Archaeological Complex, admire St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, or take in an opera or ballet performance. Vitosha Mountain offers hiking and team-building activities minutes from downtown, and evenings bring Bulgarian wine tastings, traditional taverns, and lively rooftop bars. With four distinct seasons, the city works for events all year round.
