Tegucigalpa
Known chiefly for its mainland Mayan site of vast importance, Copan, Honduras is full of surprises. While Honduras event venues are found in the capital of Tegucigalpa, which is predominantly a business center, groups in the know choose the Pacific Coast or the tropical island of Roatan - which sits in the Caribbean Sea and is famous for its Garifuna culture - for incentives.
The two largest airports, of approximately equal air lift to North American, in Honduras are the Toncontin International (TGU) in Tegucigalpa, which has direct flights to Atlanta, Miami and Houston, and Ramon Villeda Morales International (SAP), which also flies to those three cities as well as Fort Lauderdale, Newark and New York. An international-class airport also is on Roatan, the Juan Manuel Galvez International (RTB), which has service to the first three aforementioned cities.
Chief among meeting venues in Honduras is the Convention Center Plaza Juan Carlos in Tegucigalpa, which has space for up to 2,500 persons, with two main halls, the Salon Sortilegio and the Salon Celebre. It is better to choose the city you want to go to and then choose the hotel, as hotel venues in Honduras can have impressive meeting space: In Tegucigalpa there is the 164-room Real InterContinental Tegucigalpa, which has seven meeting rooms for up to 600 persons; and 153-room Tegucigalpa Marriott, which has eight meeting rooms covering 14,122 square feet of meeting space. In San Pedro Sula there is a sibling to the Tegucigalpa InterContinental, the 157-room Real InterContinental San Pedro Sula, which has space for up to 480 persons; while in Roatan, pick either the 115-room Infinity Bay Spa & Beach Resort, which has function space of 110 persons (and is due to more than triple that in the next year); or 56-room Anthony's Key Resort, which has room for 120 persons for events and activities, including interaction with its resident dolphins.
Group function spaces in Tegucigalpa include the Museo del Hombre Hondureno (meaning the Museum of Man, which happens to be in Honduras), which is more an events space than a museum that opens to the public, with the Salon Rafael Heliodoro Valle able to host 110 persons, the Salon Pablo Zelaya Sierra able to host 50 and the Salon Confucio Montes de Oca able to host 20. The Centro Cultural de Espana en Tegucigalpa, which is Spain's principal cultural outlet in the capital, has gallery space, meeting rooms and a screening room. In Roatan there is the wonderful Carambola Botanical Gardens (a labor of love for a quarter of a century of two Carolinians), which covers 40 acres and has several rustic meeting areas that really place groups amid nature; and the 19th Hole Clubhouse at the 18-hole Pristine Bay golf course, which is part of a large resort called Las Verandas. Back on the mainland one of the most wonderful hotels in the world is Pico Bonito, in the jungle at the edge of a national park and close to the small city of La Ceiba (there is an airport), which has conference space for 50 persons, function space for up to 200, 450 species of birds and 22 guest cabins.
Restaurants for groups in Tegucigalpa include Rojo, Verde y Ajo (that is, Red, Green and Garlic); Tapas y Copas, worth visiting even though it is in a strip mall on Boulevard Morazan; and Cafe La Milonga, essentially an Argentine coffee bar but one that has the best atmosphere in the city, is relatively unknown and also offers meals. On its own corner of West Bay Beach in Roatan is Bite on the Beach, which has a thatched-roof, open-sided restaurant for up to 100 persons (and very cool once the cruise ships passengers have left for the day), while on the neighboring island of Utila is the eccentric but wonderful Jade Seahorse, which has tile, glass and beads seemingly decorating everything, a few guest cabins and cool corners for groups, even though the late-night tree-house bar scene here might be too raucous for some.
