Milan Airport information

Milano is served by 3 airports: Malpensa (MXP, 45 Km from the city center), Linate (LIN, 7 Km from the city center) and Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY, 50 Km from the city center).

Malpensa International Airport (MXP)

Formerly known as City of Busto Arsizio Airport, Milan-Malpensa Airport is the largest international airport for the Milan metropolitan area in northern Italy. The airport is located 30 miles northwest of central Milan and has two terminals, two runways, and a dedicated cargo terminal. It was a major hub for flag carrier Alitalia until 2008. The airport operates flights to over 150 destinations and is served by major airlines including Aer Lingus, EasyJet, Emirates, Lufthansa, and Ryanair.

Milano Linate (LIN)

Milano Linate is the secondary international airport that served close to 10 million passengers in 2015. It is 7 kilometers east of the city center, and is used as a base by Alitalia and Alitalia CityLiner. The airport features a three-story passenger terminal that contains check-in and separate baggage reclaim facilities, office space, several shops, restaurants, and service facilities. The airport is served by major air carriers including Air France, British Airways, EasyJet, Lufthansa, and KLM.

Il Caravaggio International Airport (BGY)

Orio al Serio International Airport, also known as Il Caravaggio International Airport, is an international airport located 45 kilometers northeast of Milan. There are several public transportation links to and from downtown Milan, with the nearest railway station in Bergamo.

Milan Train information

Milano, at the crossroad of the national and European railway system, can be reached from the main Italian cities via high-speed trains (the Frecce of Trenitalia and ItaloTreno) and Intercity trains. It is also an important crossroad for regional connections.

The main stations are:

Stazione Centrale FS - piazza Duca d’Aosta connection with underground lines M2 M3 where the main trains traveling abroad are also departing from. At the Stazione Centrale there is a luggage storage, as well as several services and a big shopping area
Stazione Porta Garibaldi FS - piazza S. Freud - connection with underground lines M2 and M5
Stazione Cadorna FN - piazzale Cadorna - piazzale Cadorna connection with underground lines M2 and M1
Stazione Rogoredo FS - Via Cassinis - connection with underground line M3

Lines of the so called Passante Ferroviario named S: almost entirely underground, similar to a metro system, cross the city from North-West (Certosa and Bovisa) to South-East (Rogoredo and Forlanini).

Train information

Milan - Subway, Trams and Buses

Milano has four underground lines: M1 Rossa (Red), M2 Verde (Green), M3 Gialla (Yellow) and M5 Lilla (Purple) connecting the city to the suburbs. The M4 Blu (Blue) is under construction. Besides the underground, the Passante Ferroviario (suburban trains) connects Milano to the province, to other cities in Lombardy and outside the region.

The public transport in Milano is managed by Azienda Trasporti Milanesi - ATM.

The service on underground lines M1, M2 and M3 starts around 05.30 a.m. and ends around 12.30 a.m.; the M5 starts at 05.40 a.m. and stops at midnight.

According to each line, trams are in operation approximately from about 04.30 a.m. to 02.30 a.m. and buses from about 05.30 a.m. to 01.45 a.m.. Info here.
On some lines you can still find the historic trams from the 20s operating, adding a certain retro flair.

Lines 90 and 91 (external ring-road, 40 km) are operating 24/7.

TICKETS
Children under 14 travel free of charge.
There are several types of tickets:

Single ticket, valid 90 minutes € 2,00
24-hour pass € 7,00
Pass for 3 consecutive days € 12,00
10-ticket pass: it cannot be used by more than one people at a time € 18,00
The ticket can be used with no limitation on buses, trams, underground lines and on the urban tracks of the suburban trains (Passante Ferroviario); it must be validated at the beginning of the journey and at any transportation change.

All authorized sellers: bars, newspaper stands and tobacco shops (located inside the underground stations and overground) and automatic counters inside the underground stations.
ATM MILANO OFFICIAL APP: App for smartphones allowing to buy and validate tickets directly from the App.
Via SMS. Service available only for mobile phones with an Italian sim card.

CONTACTLESS
Inside underground stations and on buses nr 56, 70 and 73 it is possible to travel by paying directly with a contactless card belonging to certain circuits. Info here.

Milan - Taxi

Taxis in Milano are white and don’t take on people on the street. It is possible to book one on the phone and online or going directly to one of the several taxi stands.

The cost of the service varies whether it is a daytime or night service or a holiday.

Taximeters are also for collective use. Please ask for it at the beginning of the journey, for a minimum of three people leaving from the same location and reaching the same destination along the same route. Info here.

Milan - Bike Sharing, Kick scooters

Bicycles are environment friendly and practical when moving in the city. Milano offers cycling fans about 144 kilometers of cycling routes and lanes on a completely flat territory. Adults do not need to wear a helmet.

Bike sharing is present with fix pick-up and drop-off points as well as free floating that can be booked via app.

BIKEMI
The BikeMi service by ATM and Comune di Milano allows bike rental via app and online, payment is not possible with pre-paid cards.

The service offers traditional bikes, bikes with pedal assistance and some with a child-seat. Junior BikeMi is also available for kids from 6 to 10 years of age, with mandatory use of the helmet, only at certain BikeMi stations generally near a park.

Prices vary according to the user’s choice, please check them on the webpage alongside the map of pick-up points.
Rental is allowed for 16-year-olds onwards and it is operating every day of the year from 06.00 a.m. to midnight.

FREE FLOATING BIKE SHARING
"Free floating" bikes can be picked up via app and parked on the street wherever parking is not reserved or is forbidden and in all parking areas for bikes in the city. In any case, bikes must represent no obstacle for vehicles or pedestrians.

BIKES IN THE UNDERGROUND
ATM allows all passengers to carry one bike in the underground and on some tram lines. When trains are exceedingly crowded or for security or any other reason, the service can be temporarily suspended.

In compliance with national rules and regulations, electric kick scooters can circulate on urban streets with a speed limit of 50 km/h but can’t exceed 25 km/h; extra-urban streets must have a cycling route where electric scooters must circulate; on pedestrian areas the speed limit is 6 km/h. They are not allowed to circulate on sidewalks. The use of the helmet is mandatory for people under 18 years of age and it is also mandatory to wear a retro-reflective vest at night. Kids under 14 years of age are not allowed to use an electric scooter.
