Located in the Laguna Region in the southwestern part of Coahuila state, Torreon is one of Mexico's most important economic and industrial destinations. The city originally was constructed around a "torreon," or big tower, which was built to keep watch over flooding from the River Nazas. Today, Torreon's major landmark is the Cristo de las Noas, Latin America's third-largest statue of Christ, which rises 66 feet above a high hilltop.
