On the Delmarva Peninsula where one finds Maryland's Eastern Shore, Salisbury is a small city that got its start by being on the only navigable river leading to the Chesapeake Bay. Today, it is the headquarters of Perdue Farms, founded by hometown hero Frank Perdue.
Five miles to the southeast of the city center, the Salisbury-Ocean City Wicomico Regional Airport (SBY), is served by US Airways Express, with flights to Philadelphia and Charlotte, NC. The nearest international airports are in the Baltimore and Washington, DC areas.
Convention venues in Salisbury include the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center, which has a 6,500-seat arena, 12 meeting rooms and 30,000 square feet of exhibit space, among other facilities.
There are no large hotel venues in Salisbury, but lodging properties able to cater to smaller meetings include the 156-room La Quinta Inn & Suites Salisbury, which has 3,160 square feet of meeting space for up to 250 persons; the 106-room Courtyard by Marriott Salisbury, which has three meeting rooms; the 102-room Hampton Inn & Suites Fruitland-Salisbury South, which has meeting space for up to 60 persons and is in a wonderfully named suburb of Salisbury called Fruitland; the 100-room Best Western Salisbury Plaza, with meeting space for up to 20 persons; and the 79-room Holiday Inn Express, in adjacent Delmar, which has meeting space for up to 35 persons.
Unique off-site meeting venues in Salisbury and its immediate surroundings include the Salisbury Zoo, which has the ESBA Education Center and adjacent lawns and outdoor amphitheater for events; Art Institute & Gallery, which was formed in 1953 and can host seated events for up to 75 persons and receptions for 100; Fountains Wedding & Conference Center, which has a ballroom for up to 450 persons and the Steak Salisbury Restaurant; Federal-era Poplar Hill Mansion, which dates from 1732 and has space for 97 persons inside the house but for many more if the grounds are used, too, and Bordeleau Vineyards & Winery, which is beside the Wicomico Creek, can set up tents in its outdoor areas and has space for 65 persons in its tasting room and 75 in its banquet room. In addition, the Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art has an atrium lobby able to accommodate 70 for a banquet or 100 for a lecture; an education center with room for 75 people (50 for meal service).
Restaurants in Salisbury, which has no connection whatsoever with the dish Salisbury steak, include the Market Street Inn & Pub, founded in 1940, and with space for private dinners for between 12 and 24 persons; another formal pub-style joint, Brew River Restaurant & Bar, which also sits on the water; Sobo's Wine Bistro, which has a surf 'n' turf menu and refers to itself as a "beerstro," not a bistro; and, in Fruitland, Restaurant 213, which often is voted the best dining experience in the area.
