Grote Markt

Grote Markt

Historical landmark
1 km
The Grote Markt is the beating heart of the historic city centre. Admire the beautiful town hall, photograph the guild houses, enjoy a sunny terrace and discover the legend from which Antwerp is said to have derived its name. From simple square to international calling card The story of the Grote Markt begins in 1220 when Duke Henry I of Brabant donated this then simple square to the city. Somewhat later, the first annual fairs took place here and English merchants traded with Italians, Spaniards and Germans. Eventually, it became a permanent market and the international showcase of Antwerp, the most important city in the Low Countries in the 15th century. Town Hall The most striking building in the Grote Markt is of course the Town Hall, built in the 16th century. Architect Cornelis Floris de Vriendt chose a unique combination of a traditional style with innovative elements from the Italian Renaissance. In 1936, the building was officially recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Today, the Town Hall still serves as the beating heart of Antwerp's politics. After a thorough restoration, the ground floor is once again accessible, via an entrance hall on the Grote Markt. Feel like exploring the full splendour of the building?
