The main market is located in Kedonganan, several hundred meters north from the main Jimbaran coastline, with the western runway of the Ngurah Rai Internatoinal Airport in sight. At this is the largest fresh seafood market in Bali, you will encounter almost any saltwater catch, from the popular red snapper that ends up to your table at one of the seafood cafes in the bay, or a rare mahi-mahi bound to be prepared as a delish steak at your five-star hotel restaurant. If you arrive early just after sunrise, you will witness the fishing boats that come in to unload their nets and baskets filled with live fish. Locals from other areas of Bali also head here for great bargains when they’re planning for a family barbecue gathering or a party with friends.

Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park, often referred to among locals by its acronym ‘GWK’, is a multipurpose open-air site and covering 250 hectares in the hills of Ungasan, several minutes’ drive up from the main Jimbaran area. The main showpiece is a yet-to-be-completed gigantic statue depicting the benevolent Hindu god Vishnu riding on the back of the mythical garuda eagle. In its current form, the upper head and torso, the garuda head, and Vishnu’s hands are located in separate sites within the complex, which serve as singular attraction highlights. The different locations are makeshift venues for art and cultural performances, exhibitions, as well as world-class gigs. Once completed, the monument will tower 145 metres high, and will be included in the world’s list of tallest landmarks.

Renowned for its exotic setting amongst a coastal forest that is inhabited by hordes of grey long-tailed macaques, Tanah Lot is also one of the best spots to witness Bali’s dramatic sunsets, second to Tanah Lot Temple, another in Bali’s collection of highly regarded sea temples, located on the western shore in the Tabanan regency. Moreover, just a hundred meters south of the main Uluwatu Temple complex is an open amphitheatre where daily Kecak ‘fire dance’ performances are held at sunset. The simians that dwell in the surrounding forests are believed to be the guardians of the temple.
