EEN IDEALE ONTMOETINGSPLEK. Historici zeggen dat Castello de Leone de oude naam was van dit versterkte dorp, dat nog steeds intact en sober is, gelegen op een strategische locatie om de weg te controleren die naar de San Pellegrino-pas leidt, een manier om verbinding te maken met het noorden van Italië, voorbij de Apennijnen. Het lot van Castiglione is, in tegenstelling tot de meeste landen van Garfagnana, sinds 1371 altijd in verband gebracht met Lucca, maar het werd nooit onderworpen, ondanks weinig aanvallen, aan de familie Este. De muren die we kunnen zien met zijn majestueuze torens uit de 15e eeuw, die zelfs vandaag de dag nog 750 meter lang het stadscentrum omringen. De historische hoofdstad van Garfagnana was al in de Byzantijnse tijd een belangrijke vestingstad. Uit documenten uit de 8e eeuw blijkt dat er voortdurend naar de muren wordt verwezen. De stad had ook twee andere vestingwerken: het kasteel van S. Nicolao en een bisschoppelijk kasteel.
Castelnuovo werd in 1170 bezet door de troepen van Lucca, die Castel S. Nicolao verwoestten en vervolgens, na de komst van Castruccio Castracani, werden de vestingwerken gerenoveerd en werd de bouw van nieuwe muren bevorderd.
De stad viel in de 16e eeuw onder de jurisdictie van Estensi en werd aangewezen als residentie van de commissaris-generaal van Garfagnana, tegenwoordig gevestigd in het bisschoppelijk kasteel Rocca Ariostesca, van de prestigieuze dichter Ludovico Ariosto die hier verbleef als gouverneur Estense van 1523 tot 1525.
