Originally, this garden was intended to serve merely as an experimental plantation for introducing various crops to the Dutch East Indies. However, over time, the establishment of the Bogor Botanical Gardens marked the beginning of scientific development in Indonesia and became an organized platform for scientists, particularly in the field of botany, during the period of 1880 to 1905. From this foundation, several other scientific institutions emerged, such as Bibliotheca Bogoriensis (1842), Herbarium Bogoriense (1844), Cibodas Botanical Garden (1860), Treub Laboratory (1884), and the Zoological Museum and Laboratory (1894). Founded in 1817 by the government of the Dutch East Indies, the Bogor Botanical Gardens grew rapidly under the leadership of renowned botanists including Johannes Elias Teijsmann, Rudolph Herman Christiaan Carel Scheffer, and Melchior Treub. Since its establishment, the garden has served as a major research center for agriculture and horticulture, and it is the oldest botanical garden in Southeast Asia. Located in the heart of Bogor city, it is adjacent to the Bogor Presidential Palace complex. The garden spans 87 hectares and houses a collection of 15,000 species of trees and plants.
