The South African Museum, established in 1825 by Lord Charles Somerset, is the oldest and largest museum on the sub-continent. A landmark in the historic Company's Garden, the Museum is housed in an elegant late-Victorian building which was opened in the 1880's and has been enlarged with modern extensions. The center-piece of the new wing is the Whale Well, one of the Mother city's most spectacular venues. The ambiance of the exhibits, which range from fossil footprints to trance-inspired San rock paintings, lends a unique atmosphere to performances and other events held in the Museum. Celebrating a special occasion or hosting corporate clients in the Whale Well is an unforgettable experience, enhanced by the majestic presence of the Blue Whale. Using the Museum for your special events and conferences furthers awareness of South Africa's rich natural and cultural heritage.
