PLATEAU OF LASSITHI
Recreation
45 kms
The Lassithi Plateau (approx. altitude 1000 m) is well known for the thousands of white sailed windmills, 10000 in all, this is how the plain used to be irrigated, a scenic way of supplying water, designed by Venetian engineers in 1464. Although very few windmills are in use today, it still makes a splendid sight against the mountains. The fertile soil of the Lassithi Plateau is mostly growing potatoes and apples. There area also many almond trees which blossom in late January, giving the plateau a wonderful appearance. People have inhabited Lassithi since Neolithic times (6000 B.C.) except for a period of 200 years during Venetian rule. The Venetians could not control the inhabitants of Lassithi because of its position in the mountains, so, once the pople were relocated, they forbade the plateau to be inhabited under penalty of death. You may circle the plateaum visiting its villages along a paved road. A visit to The Dikti Cave, said to be the birthplace of Zeus is well worth a visit while here. (See separate description).
