Die heutige Pousada dos Loios war das Kloster S. João Evangelista oder das Kloster von Loios. Es wurde 1487 vom 1. Grafen von Olivença, D. Rodrigo Melo, gegründet und in Lizenz von D. João II auf einem Grundstück errichtet, auf dem früher ein Teil der arabischen Burg von Évora stand. Diese Burg lag in völliger Ruine, nachdem sie während der Revolution von 1383-85 einen Brand erlitten hatte. Grund dafür waren Schlachten zur Unterstützung von D. João, dem Meister von Avis, der als D. João I. den Thron besteigen sollte.
