Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts vom Stadtrat von Almada restauriert, hat dieser ehemalige Ort der Kontemplation, der der religiösen Verehrung gewidmet war, seit mehr als vier Jahrhunderten die Anmut und den Frieden bewahrt, die der Meditation förderten, und die Einsamkeit, nach der sich die ersten Bewohner sehnten. Mitte des 21. Jahrhunderts, abseits des Trubels der Stadt, gilt dieser Kultraum als Kulturzentrum schlechthin, das sich der klassischen Musik und bildenden Kunst widmet. Die gesamte Umgebung mit Blick auf den Atlantik, umgeben von schönen Gärten und einem Aussichtspunkt, weit weg vom Lärm der großen Zentren, aber nur wenige Minuten von Lissabon entfernt.

Die Idee, das Christkönigsdenkmal zu errichten, kam 1934 auf, als der verstorbene Kardinalpatriarch von Lissabon, Seine Eminenz Manuel Gonçalves Cerejeira, Brasilien besucht. Auf seiner Reise durch Rio de Janeiro stößt er auf die beeindruckende Statue von Christus dem Erlöser in Corcovado und in seinem Herzen wächst sofort der Wunsch, vor Lissabon etwas Ähnliches zu bauen. So wurde 1936 die Idee, ein Christkönigsdenkmal zu errichten, dem Gebetsapostolat bekannt, das es mit Begeisterung begrüßte. Um national zu sein, benötigte das Denkmal die Zustimmung und Zusammenarbeit aller portugiesischen Bischöfe, was schließlich im Gemeinsamen Pastoralschreiben der Bischöfe für die Fastenzeit von 1937 eingeholt und offiziell bekannt gegeben wurde.
