Im März und April des darauffolgenden Jahres verlassen sie Kunming und fliegen zurück in den Nordosten Chinas und Sibiriens. Es ist für Einheimische und Touristen gleichermaßen zur Tradition geworden, die Möwen am Green Lake im Winter und frühen Frühling zu füttern.
