Marseilles Geschichte wird seit 26 Jahrhunderten im Alten Hafen aufgeführt. Während der Antike und des Mittelalters dehnten sich die griechische (Massalia), römische (Massilia) und mittelalterliche (Masiho) Stadt im 17. Jahrhundert am Nordufer und im Süden aus. Die Einfahrt zum Hafen wurde fortan von zwei Forts bewacht, Fort Saint-Nicolas und Fort Saint-Jean.
 Eines der ikonischen Symbole des Alten Hafens war die Transporterbrücke, eine Metallstruktur, die 1905 zwischen beiden Forts geöffnet wurde und leider nach dem Krieg zerstört wurde. Der alte Hafen wurde 2013 renoviert (leichterer Zugang zum Hafen, weniger Verkehr, die von Norman Foster geschaffene Ombrière). Bis heute ist der alte Hafen das pulsierende Herz von Marseille.
