Das Museum, ehemals Wachsmuseum „Luigi Cattaneo“ — Museum für Anatomie und pathologische Histologie „C. Taruffi“, enthält eine Sammlung anatomischer Wachsmodelle des 19. Jahrhunderts des florentinischen Modellierers Clemente Susini und von Wachsmodellierern aus Bologna, von denen die wichtigsten Giuseppe Astorri und Cesare Bettini sind. Der historische Moment der Bologneser Schule war, als der Anatomielehrer begann, die durch die verschiedenen Krankheiten verursachten Variationen, Fehlbildungen, Teratologien und Formveränderungen zu erforschen und Modelle aus Wachs im Verhältnis zur normalen Morphologie zu erstellen. Neben diesen Wachsproben sind getrocknete Exemplare des untersuchten Falls ausgestellt, die zusammen mit Drucken der Originalzeichnungen als Lehrmittel äußerst nützlich sind und so die Arbeitsweise der Anatomen dieser Zeit veranschaulichen.

Die Gemäldesammlung begann 1796 und hatte ihren ersten Schwerpunkt in Werken von Kirchen und Klöstern, die von der napoleonischen Regierung abgeschafft wurden. 1808 wurde die Sammlung an den heutigen Standort, das ehemalige Kloster St. Ignazio in der Via Belle Arti, verlegt. Nach Napoleons Sturz 1815 erhielt die Gemäldegalerie fast alle Gemälde, die von der napoleonischen Regierung aus der Stadt nach Paris und Mailand gebracht wurden. Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts wurden viele wichtige Kunstwerke in die Sammlung aufgenommen, da die religiösen Orden abgeschafft wurden und der neugeborene italienische Staat Eigentümer eines großen Teils seiner Kunstschätze wurde. Mit der Neuorganisation der Sammlung wurde die Gemäldegalerie zu einer der wichtigsten Galerien Europas, nicht nur was die barocke Bologneser Malerei betrifft.
