Die Gründung des Vitra Design Museum geht auf die frühen 1980er Jahre zurück. Um die Geschichte des Unternehmens Vitra zu dokumentieren, begann der CEO von Vitra, Rolf Fehlbaum, Möbel von Designern zu sammeln, die die Entwicklung des Unternehmens beeinflusst hatten, wie Charles und Ray Eames, George Nelson, Alvar Aalto und Jean Prouvé. Mit dem Wachstum der Sammlung wuchs auch der Wunsch nach einem architektonischen Ort, an dem die Objekte ausgestellt werden konnten. Bereits 1986 entwickelte Fehlbaum das Konzept für ein Designmuseum und kontaktierte 1987 Frank O. Gehry als Architekt für das geplante Museumsgebäude. Im selben Jahr traf Fehlbaum durch Ray Eames den späteren Direktor des Museums Alexander von Vegesack. Fehlbaum und von Vegesack entwickelten gemeinsam die Idee eines öffentlich operierenden Museums aus der ursprünglichen Idee einer geschlossenen Privatsammlung.

Die Messe Basel umfasst eine Bruttoausstellungsfläche von 162.000 Quadratmetern, verteilt auf 6 Hallen. (Halle 6 enthält nicht abnehmbare Ständer für BaselWorld.) Das mehrstöckige Parkhaus in der Nähe des Ausstellungsgeländes bietet 1.600 Parkplätze. Bei Bedarf können weitere 4.000 Park & Ride-Parkplätze zur Verfügung gestellt werden.
