Es liegt im Stadtzentrum und wird auf Chinesisch Gu Gong genannt. Es war der Kaiserpalast für vierundzwanzig Kaiser während der Ming- und Qing-Dynastien. Es wurde erstmals 14 Jahre lang während der Regierungszeit von Kaiser Chengzu in der Ming-Dynastie (1368-1644) erbaut. Alte chinesische Astronomen glaubten, dass sich der Purpurstern (Polaris) in der Mitte des Himmels befinde und der himmlische Kaiser im Purpurpalast lebte. Der Palast für den Kaiser auf Erden wurde die Purple City genannt. Es war verboten, ohne besondere Genehmigung des Kaisers einzutreten. Daher der Name „Die lila verbotene Stadt“, normalerweise „Die verbotene Stadt“.
