Ein weiteres Merkmal des Museums ist sein Wunsch, zeitgemäß zu sein, was in seinen Anfängen eine Reaktion auf die Anliegen der lokalen Künstlergemeinschaft war. Diese Wette auf Zeitgemäßheit kam etwa zehn Jahre später zustande, als ein neues Museum für zeitgenössische und moderne Kunst gegründet wurde. So öffnete das Museum für Moderne Kunst, das sich ursprünglich in Ratsgebäuden befand, 1924 seine eigenen Türen. Ihr erster Direktor war der Maler Aurelio Arteta.

Das Gebäude wurde von den Architekten Federico Soriano und Dolores Palacios so entworfen, dass es einem im Bau befindlichen Schiff ähnelt, da es an der Stelle steht, an der sich früher die Euskalduna-Werft befand.
