Das Planetarium wurde auf einer ehemaligen künstlichen Insel am Michigansee errichtet. Northerly Island, wie es genannt wird, war die erste einer Reihe künstlicher Inseln, die sich nach Süden erstreckten. Die permanente Landverbindung wurde kurz nach dem Bau des Planetariums errichtet. Jede der zwölf Ecken des denkmalgeschützten Gebäudes aus den 1930er Jahren ist mit einer Bronzetafel geschmückt, die ein Tierkreiszeichen darstellt. Diese Plaketten wurden vom Bildhauer Alfonso Ianelli geschaffen. Das denkmalgeschützte Gebäude wurde vom Architekten Ernest Grunsfeld entworfen. Der Adler beherbergt eine der schönsten Sammlungen astronomischer Artefakte der Welt, darunter Schätze wie die älteste bekannte Fenstersonnenuhr der Welt (datiert 1529) auf der Außenterrasse, die sich perfekt als Kulisse für Hochzeitszeremonien und Cocktailempfänge eignet.
