Cleveland State University’s Conference and Event Services incorporates a comprehensive approach to the elimination and diversion of waste as part of our event management practices. We prioritize source reduction by utilizing digital contracts, registrations, and communications to limit paper usage, while also relying on reusable furniture, signage, and staging equipment to minimize disposables. Across campus, single-stream recycling is in place for plastics, paper, cardboard, aluminum, and glass, and CES ensures recycling receptacles are co-located with waste bins at events for maximum diversion. Large deliveries are broken down for cardboard recycling, and single-use plastics are reduced through the use of water refill stations and vendor compliance with CSU’s sustainability guidelines. For large-scale conferences, CES incorporates waste management into the planning process by coordinating custodial staffing, recycling logistics, and client education. Together, these efforts support the university’s broader sustainability initiatives while reducing the environmental impact of events.
