Die Geschichte des Bangladesh National Museum ist ereignisreich und glorreich. Sie ist in chronologischer Reihenfolge mit der Geschichte Britisch-Indiens, der Geburt und Auflösung Pakistans und der Entstehung Bangladeschs verbunden. Zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts schuf Lord Curzon, Vizekönig von Indien, durch seine Politik der Anpassung der Provinzen den politischen Boden für die Gründung eines Museums in Dhaka. Er teilte Bengalen am 16. Oktober 1905 auf. Die historische Stadt Dhaka wurde zur Hauptstadt der neuen Provinz Ostbengalen und Assam. Folglich erlebte Dhaka ein enormes körperliches Wachstum mit umfassender Entwicklung.

Die verfassungsgebende Versammlung von Bangladesch und das erste Parlament tagten in dem Gebäude, das heute das Büro des Premierministers beherbergt und das oft als das alte Shangshad Bhaban (altes Parlamentsgebäude) bezeichnet wird. Das zweite Parlament hielt auch die meisten seiner Sitzungen in diesem Gebäude ab, die letzte Sitzung fand am 10. Juli 1981 statt. Während der Amtszeit des zweiten Parlaments wurde das heutige Parlamentsgebäude oder Shangshad Bhaban in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar funktionsfähig. Ihre achte und übrigens letzte Sitzung begann am 15. Februar 1982 im neuen Gebäude.
