Das Rote Fort ist eine historische Festung in der Stadt Delhi in Indien, die als Hauptwohnsitz der Mogulkaiser diente. Kaiser Shah Jahan gab am 12. Mai 1638 den Wiederaufbau des Roten Forts in Auftrag, als er beschloss, seine Hauptstadt von Agra nach Delhi zu verlegen. Das ursprünglich rot-weiße Design wird einem Architekten zugeschrieben. Es wurde zwischen Mai 1639 und April 1648 rekonstruiert. Am 15. August 1947 hisste der erste Premierminister Indiens, Jawaharlal Nehru, die indische Nationalflagge über dem Lahori-Tor. [1] Jedes Jahr am indischen Unabhängigkeitstag (15. August) hisst der Premierminister am Haupttor des Forts die indische „dreifarbige Flagge“ und hält von den Festungsmauern aus eine landesweit ausgestrahlte Rede.

Im Zentrum von Neu-Delhi steht das 42 m hohe India Gate, ein „Arc-de-Triomphe“ -ähnlicher Torbogen inmitten einer Kreuzung. Es ähnelt fast seinem französischen Gegenstück und erinnert an die 70.000 indischen Soldaten, die im Ersten Weltkrieg im Kampf für die britische Armee ihr Leben verloren haben. Das Denkmal trägt die Namen von mehr als 13.516 britischen und indischen Soldaten, die im Afghanistankrieg 1919 an der Nordwestgrenze getötet wurden. Bei Einbruch der Dunkelheit ist das India Gate dramatisch beleuchtet und die Springbrunnen in der Nähe sorgen mit ihren farbigen Lichtern für ein schönes Schauspiel. Das India Gate steht an einem Ende von Rajpath, und die Umgebung wird allgemein als „India Gate“ bezeichnet.
