Buyukada ist das Stadtzentrum der neun Inseln Istanbuls. Es hat eine Fläche von 5.400 Quadratmetern. Die Bevölkerung wächst in den Sommermonaten um das 10- bis 15-fache. Die meisten Gebäude werden nur im Sommer als Ferienhäuser genutzt. Die Insel besteht aus zwei Hügeln: dem 164 Meter hohen Isa Tepesi (Hristos) im Norden und dem 202 Meter hohen Yuce Tepe (Aya Yorgi) im Süden. Wenn das Laub von Buyukada außerhalb der besiedelten Gebiete untersucht wird, kann man feststellen, dass Nadelwälder (Pinus brutia Ten.) mit mediterraner Buschbodenbedeckung weit verbreitet sind. Die einzigen Baumarten, die Wälder auf der Insel bilden, sind Rotkiefern. Da die Insel an der nördlichsten Grenze des natürlichen Gebietes der Rotkiefern in der Türkei liegt, ist die Bodenbedeckung sehr flach und die Bäume stehen seit Jahrhunderten unter menschlichem Einfluss, was zu unförmigen und verkümmerten Einzelbäumen geführt hat. Die zweite Art von einheimischem Laub auf der Insel ist das mediterrane Gestrüpp. Das mediterrane Gestrüpp ist das charakteristischste Pflanzenleben im Mittelmeerraum der Türkei. Die mediterranen Buschelemente, die sich sekundär auf der Insel gebildet haben, sind ziemlich hoch. Andererseits haben sich in den besiedelten Gebieten der Insel viele exotische Pflanzen an die Bedingungen angepasst
