Einst ein Kloster aus dem 17. Jahrhundert, blickt Locke de Santa Joana auf eine reiche, unverwechselbare Geschichte zurück. Der als Schloss und Stadtmauer von Lissabon bekannte Komplex wurde per Dekret vom 16. Juni 1910 als Nationaldenkmal eingestuft.
Das Denkmal gehört dem portugiesischen Staat und wurde dem Stadtrat von Lissabon am 13. September 1934 vorläufig und am 31. Mai 1942 dauerhaft übergeben.
Am 8. Juni 1979 wurde die Neufassung der Bedingungen für die Zuweisung des Castelo de São Jorge veröffentlicht, und im Oktober 1995 beauftragte die Stadtversammlung von Lissabon das Castelo de São Jorge der EBAHL (Equipamentos dos Bairros Históricos de Lisboa E.M.), der 2003 die EGEAC (Empresa de Gestão de Equipamentos e Animação Cultural E.M.) folgte.
Das Denkmal besteht aus dem Schloss, den Ruinen des Paço da Alcáçova (Palast der Zitadelle), dem Waffenpalast, einem weiten Aussichtspunkt über die Stadt, einem archäologischen Zentrum, Gärten und einer Reihe von Mauern.
Das Denkmal nimmt eine Fläche von rund 4 Hektar ein und wird von einem großen Mauerring begrenzt, der teilweise den Grenzen der alten Zitadelle von Lissabon entspricht.
