Es definiert seinen Horizont neu, um einen Ort zu schaffen, an dem sich seine beiden Ufer vereinen. Nie zuvor war ein Museum ausschließlich den Kulturen des Mittelmeers gewidmet, trotz ihres Reichtums und ihrer Vielfalt in Bezug auf Geschichte und Zivilisation. In Marseille befindet sich heute ein Museum nach seinem Bild, das sich an die Nordküste des Mittelmeers lehnt und dem Meer zugewandt ist und dem Strom des Wandels ausgesetzt ist. Das MuCEM ist weit mehr als ein Museum, es ist ein Kulturzentrum, das alle Disziplinen der Sozialwissenschaften vereint und künstlerischen Ausdruck von den beiden Ufern des Mittelmeers aus präsentiert. Noch wichtiger ist, dass es eine neue Art ist, das Mittelmeer als Ort der Offenheit und des Teilens zu betrachten, über eine gemeinsame Geschichte nachzudenken, den Dialog der Zivilisationen zu verstehen, die damit verbundenen Herausforderungen zu erklären, diese auf zeitgenössische Phänomene anzuwenden und einen neuen öffentlichen Raum zu gestalten.
