Die Nachbarinsel Delos (UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe) ist eine der bedeutendsten mythologischen und archäologischen Stätten im Mittelmeer, die in Homers Odyssee erwähnt wird. Delos war ein heiliges Heiligtum, lange bevor die olympische griechische Mythologie es zum Geburtsort der Zwillingsgötter Apollo, Gott des Lichts, und Artemis, Göttin der Jagd, machte. Belege für die Besiedlung der Insel stammen aus dem Jahr 3000 v. Chr. und Delos gewann während der mykenischen Zeit an Bedeutung. Sein Ruf als heilige Insel zog eine große Anzahl von Gläubigen an. Der Handel florierte und verwandelte Delos nach 800 v. Chr. fast tausend Jahre lang in einen robusten Handelshafen. Ab 478 v. Chr. befand sich hier die Schatzkammer der Delischen Liga, bevor sie auf die Akropolis in Athen verlegt wurde. Ein kleines Museum inmitten der Ruinen der antiken Stadt (in der einst über 25.000 Menschen lebten) enthält viele wichtige Artefakte, die bei den laufenden Ausgrabungen der Stätte entdeckt wurden.
