Die Geschichte des Zenkoji-Tempels begann 642, als Yoshimitsu Honda an der heutigen Stätte ein buddhistisches Bild verewigte.
Das Hauptbild wurde in Indien geschaffen und 552 mit dem Buddhismus über Paekche auf der koreanischen Halbinsel nach Japan eingeführt. Es heißt auf Japanisch „Das Bild von Sangoku Denrai“.
Es wurde angenommen, dass das Bild alle Menschen unabhängig von ihrem Status, Geschlecht oder Glauben in das buddhistische Reine Land führt. Es wurde von vielen Menschen, von den damaligen Machthabern bis hin zum einfachen Volk, ernsthaft verehrt.
Das Hauptbild war 654 vollständig vor den Menschen verborgen, und seitdem durfte es niemand mehr sehen.
Der Tempelname „Zenkoji“ bedeutet wörtlich „Yoshimitsus Tempel“. Es wird als „Zenkoji“ gelesen, indem die chinesischen Schriftzeichen auf andere Weise gelesen werden.
