Bei dem Entwurf, der auf der Erforschung chinesischer Keramik beruhte, wurden Stahlträger verwendet, um die Stützen für das ausziehbare Dach zu verstecken, was dem Stadion den Anschein eines „Vogelnestes“ verlieh. Der führende chinesische Künstler Ai Weiwei war der künstlerische Berater des Projekts.
