Trotz seines Spitznamens ist das Gebäude kein echter Würfel, sondern ein Quader (ein rechteckiger Kasten). Der Spatenstich erfolgte am 24. Dezember 2003, und das Center wurde fertiggestellt und am 28. Januar 2008 zur Nutzung übergeben. Die Schwimmer des Water Cube brachen während der Olympischen Spiele 2008 25 Weltrekorde.

Das Nationalstadion von Peking, offiziell das Nationalstadion, auch bekannt als das Vogelnest (Niǎocháo), ist ein Stadion in Peking, China. Das Stadion wurde für die Nutzung während der Olympischen Sommerspiele und Paralympics 2008 konzipiert. Das Stadion befindet sich im Olympic Green und kostete 423 Millionen US-Dollar. Der Entwurf wurde im April 2003 vom Schweizer Architekturbüro Herzog & de Meuron nach einem Ausschreibungsverfahren mit 13 endgültigen Einreichungen ausgezeichnet. Bei dem Entwurf, der auf der Erforschung chinesischer Keramik beruhte, wurden Stahlträger verwendet, um die Stützen für das ausziehbare Dach zu verstecken, was dem Stadion den Anschein eines Vogelnestes verlieh. Der führende chinesische Künstler Ai Weiwei war der künstlerische Berater für das Projekt. Das ausziehbare Dach wurde später aus dem Entwurf entfernt, nachdem es den bekanntesten Aspekt des Stadions inspiriert hatte. Der Spatenstich erfolgte am 24. Dezember 2003 und das Stadion wurde am 28. Juni 2008 offiziell eröffnet. Der Bau eines Einkaufszentrums und eines Hotels ist geplant, um die Nutzung des Stadions zu erhöhen, das nach den Olympischen Spielen Probleme hatte, Veranstaltungen wie Fußball und andere Veranstaltungen anzuziehen.
