Das Casa da Música wurde anlässlich des festlichen Jahres 2001 entworfen, in dem die Stadt Porto zur Kulturhauptstadt Europas ernannt wurde. Es ist das erste Gebäude in Portugal, das von Anfang an ausschließlich der Musik gewidmet ist, entweder in öffentlichen Aufführungen oder im Bereich der künstlerischen Ausbildung und des künstlerischen Schaffens.
Das Projekt von Casa da Música wurde 1999 als Ergebnis einer internationalen Architekturausschreibung in Gang gesetzt, die durch das von Rem Koolhaas-Büro für Metropolitan Architecture vorgestellte Projekt gewonnen wurde. Die Ausgrabungen begannen 1999 an der Endstation der alten Straßenbahn im Kreisverkehr Boavista (Rotunda da Boavista), und die Casa da Musica wurde im Frühjahr 2005, am 15. April, eingeweiht.
