Dieses Gebirgsmassiv wurde nach dem Luchs benannt, der in der kroatischen Sprache Ris am häufigsten lebt. Es erstreckt sich über eine Fläche von 64 km2 und liegt dort, wo die Alpen auf das Dinarische Gebirge treffen und wo das Mittelmeer allmählich der Pannonischen Ebene weicht. Es vereint fast alle Waldtypen der Gebiete und beherbergt zahlreiche Pflanzen- und Tierarten. Naturliebhaber kommen wegen der Schönheit der Berge, Wälder, Gewässer und Karsts nach Risnjak. Die häufigsten Besucher sind Bergsteiger, für die der höchste Gipfel des Massivs die lohnendste Herausforderung ist. Der Gipfel des Risnjak ist zu jeder Jahreszeit gleichermaßen attraktiv: im Winter, wenn er mit Schnee bedeckt ist; im Frühling, wenn sich die umliegenden Wiesen in Blumenteppiche verwandeln; im Sommer, wenn er im nahegelegenen Küstengebiet Erholung von der Hitze bietet, und im Herbst, wenn die Bäume in unzähligen Farben getaucht sind. Neben dem Luchs, dem Symbol des Berges, gibt es auch Braunbären, Marder und Siebenschläfer. Risnjak ist auch berühmt für seinen fantastischen Blick auf die Inseln in der Kvarner-Bucht und die Berge im benachbarten Slowenien und weiter bis zu den Alpen.

Die Burg Trsat stellt einen strategisch geprägten Aussichtspunkt auf einem 138 Meter über dem Meeresspiegel liegenden Hügel dar, der Rijeka dominiert. Es wurde 1288 zum ersten Mal als Pfarrzentrum erwähnt. An derselben Stelle befand sich aus prähistorischer Zeit ein liburnischer Beobachtungsposten, der zur Überwachung der Straßen diente, die vom Hinterland zur Küste führten. Dieser Ort diente den Römern gut, um ihr Verteidigungssystem, den sogenannten liburnischen Limes, aufzubauen, dessen Ausgangspunkt die Festungsstadt Tarsatica war — die sich an der Stelle der heutigen Altstadt von Rijeka befand.

Dieser Berg ist sowohl vom Landesinneren Istriens, von Rijeka oder Gorski Kotar als auch von den Kvarner-Inseln aus wunderbar zu betrachten. Natürlich ist es noch schöner, es von innen zu erkunden, was nicht schwierig ist, da die gesamte Učka mit einem Netz von Bergwegen verwoben ist.
