Das Amphitheater war Schauplatz von Spektakeln, darunter Wildtierkämpfe, Jagden, öffentliche Hinrichtungen und Gladiatorenkämpfe. Die in Tarraco wurde im frühen 2. Jahrhundert n. Chr. erbaut und 221 renoviert, wie die 140 Meter lange Inschrift zeigt, die längste im gesamten Imperium, die das Podium krönte. Heute ist ein Teil der in den Fels gehauenen nördlichen Sitzplätze noch erhalten, obwohl sie stark erodiert sind, und ein Teil der südlichen Sitzplätze, die von Betongewölben getragen werden. Hier wurden 259 n. Chr. der Heilige Fructuosus und seine Diakone gemartert. Um daran zu erinnern, wurde Ende des 6. Jahrhunderts eine westgotische Basilika errichtet, über der im 12. Jahrhundert die mittelalterliche Kirche Santa María del Milagro errichtet wurde.
