Loro Parque wurde 1972 von Wolfgang Kiessling und seinem Vater gegründet. Am 17. Dezember 1972 wurde der Loro Parque offiziell eröffnet. Zu dieser Zeit hatte es eine Grundfläche von etwa 13.000 m² und etwa 150 Papageien sowie eine Loro-Show. Er wurde ursprünglich als Papageienpark angelegt, was ihm seinen Namen gab, denn Loro ist das spanische Wort für „Papagei“. In der gesamten Region wurden über 3000 Palmen gepflanzt. 1984 veranstaltete der Loro Parque die erste Papageien-Freiflugshow in Europa.
