About us

Das Arts Centre Washington befindet sich in der neuen Stadt Washington, die sich in gleicher Entfernung zwischen Newcastle, Sunderland und Durham befindet. Das Gebiet hat seine Wurzeln im Bergbau. Die letzte Grube in der Gegend wurde in den 1980er Jahren geschlossen. Noch weiter zurück gaben die Vorfahren von George Washington, die hier lebten, der Gegend ihren Namen. Eine der bekanntesten Legenden im Nordosten, The Lambton Worm, fand angeblich nur einen Steinwurf vom Kunstzentrum entfernt statt. Das Kunstzentrum selbst ist ein umgebauter Bauernhof aus dem 19. Jahrhundert, eine Ruine, die 1972 bei der Entwicklung der Neustadt gerettet wurde, als beschlossen wurde, ein Kunst- und Kulturzentrum in die Vision für das Gebiet aufzunehmen. Ursprünglich Biddick Farm Arts Centre genannt, hat es mehrere Inkarnationen durchgemacht und ist heute ein pulsierendes Multikunstzentrum geworden, das ein Theater, eine Galerie, Proberäume, Künstlerstudios, ein Aufnahmestudio, ein Café und eine preisgekrönte Bar beherbergt. Es gehört heute dem Stadtrat von Sunderland und wird von diesem verwaltet.
