Martha's Vineyard Camp Meeting Association
Historical landmark
15 mins
The Martha's Vineyard Camp Meeting Association, located in the town center of Oak Bluffs, offers a rare experience for visitors. Consisting of hundreds of artistic, colorful, one-of-a-kind gingerbread cottages, it contains the most perfectly preserved collection of Carpenter Gothic style architecture in the world. These truly unique Victorian "gingerbread" cottages are just a stones throw from the famed Tabernacle. The Martha’s Vineyard Camp Meeting Association continues as a tribute to the Methodist revival meetings that began back in 1835 and continued through the Civil War era. Thousands flocked to the meetings on Martha’s Vineyard and over time, they built the Victorian Gingerbread village of cottages in on same spot they had once pitched canvas tents. Famous dignitaries such as Harriet Beecher Stowe and President Ulysses S. Grant were visitors to the cottages more than 100 years ago.
