The White House is the official residence and principal workplace of the President of the United States. Located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, D.C., it was designed by Irish-born James Hoban and built between 1792 and 1800 of white-painted Aquia sandstone in the late Georgian style. It has been the residence of every U.S. President since John Adams. When Thomas Jefferson moved into the home in 1801, he (with architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe) expanded the building outward, creating two colonnades that were meant to conceal stables and storage.

In 1922, construction of the George Washington Masonic Memorial began on Shuter's Hill, which had played a significant historical role during the Civil War. There were two forts on the hill: Fort Dahlgren and Fort Ellsworth, which became part of the ring of more than 160 forts and batteries built to protect the capital. Shuter’s Hill was a commanding position, providing defense of the two major arteries, King and Duke streets. The outline of the northeast bastion of Fort Ellsworth is still visible on the grounds of the Memorial. The brochure "Shuter's Hill: A Wealth of History" published by Alexandria Archaeology museum, provides a summary of the history and archaeology of the site, based upon 13 years of research and excavation:

The Walter E. Washington Convention Center is a 2.3 million square foot (210,000 m²) building located in Washington, D.C. The center was designed by Atlanta-based architecture firm Thompson, Ventulett, Stainback & Associates. The center is located in a superblock bounded by Mount Vernon Square and 7th, 9th, and N streets, N.W. It is served by the Mt Vernon Sq/7th St-Convention Center station on the Yellow and Green lines of the Washington Metro. It was completed in 2003. The Washington Convention Center Authority (WCCA) Board of Directors agreed to expand the newly built convention center by 75,000 square feet (7,000 m²) and build and own a hotel with between 1,220 and 1,500 rooms and an additional 100,000 square feet (9,300 m2) of convention and ballroom space. Most of the inaugural balls for the 2005 Presidential Inauguration of George W. Bush were held at the convention center, and six of the 10 official balls of the 2009 Presidential Inauguration of Barack Obama took place there, including the first-ever Neighborhood Ball. In 2006, the Council of the District of Columbia approved legislation naming the then-Washington Convention Center in honor of the city's first home rule mayor, the late Walter E. Washington.

The United States Capitol is the meeting place of the United States Congress, the legislature of the Federal government of the United States. Located in Washington, D.C., it sits atop Capitol Hill at the eastern end of the National Mall. Though not in the geographic center of the District of Columbia, the Capitol is the origin by which the quadrants of the District are divided. Officially, both the east and west sides of the Capitol are referred to as "fronts". Historically, however, the east front was the side of the building intended for the arrival of visitors and dignitaries.
