It’s not an exaggeration to say Halifax, a city on the sea, owes its existence to the Citadel. It was the large hill overlooking the easily defended harbour below that led the British military to found the town there in 1749. Among the first buildings constructed was a wooden guardhouse on top of what would eventually be called Citadel Hill, with Halifax’s first settlers building their homes at the base of the hill, closer to the water. Over the years, as the fort grew, so too did the town, with much of Halifax dedicated to supplying the soldiers with both essential supplies and off-duty entertainment. The Halifax Citadel National Historic site is open year-round and admission varies with the season. Guided tours are available May through October.

Photo Credit: Wally Hayes The Halifax Public Gardens are a 16-acre oasis in the heart of downtown Halifax. Officially opened in 1867, The Halifax Public Gardens have retained much of their original Victorian character thanks to a series of talented superintendents, chief horticulturists, and gardeners. Through their efforts, the Public Gardens were designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1984. In true Victorian fashion, the Gardens boast ornate fountains, a bandstand, statues, urns and a magnificent wrought iron entrance. Also among their treasures are over 140 different species of trees, including unusual or rare species and some centenarians. Their serpentine, scroll and carpet beds guarantee a bounty of colour and fragrance throughout the season.
